In his final year, Paul Klee faced personal difficulties but managed to produce some of his most innovative works. This book explores the artist's response to his illness and the realities of his time, using endlessly inventive imagery that ranges from political to playful, solemn, humorous, and poetic. Through his works, Klee experimented with form and material, capturing the joys and sorrows of life. Esteemed art historian Dawn Ades contextualizes these paintings and drawings within their historical moment and shows how they marked a pivotal moment in art history. This beautiful publication showcases the novelty and creativity of Klee's late works, which had a profound influence on subsequent generations of artists.
