Eileen Gray (1878–1976) was a versatile designer and architect who worked in various literary and artistic circles. This book chronicles Gray’s career as a designer, architect, painter, and photographer. The essays, featuring new research, analyze over 50 designs and architectural projects, accompanied by period and new photographs. Gray studied the Japanese craft of lacquer and opened a textile studio in Paris where she owned and directed the influential “Jean Désert” gallery and store. Despite struggles for acceptance as a self-taught woman in male-dominated fields, Gray worked on personal and socially driven architectural and interior projects, including the iconic modern house Villa E 1027 and demountable projects like the Camping Tent.
