Marcel Breuer: Building Global Institutions is a collection of essays by scholars that analyze Breuer’s approach, strategies, and iconic buildings. Breuer, a celebrated architect, furniture designer, and teacher, is known for his modernist design in America. Originally from Hungary, Breuer was one of the first students at the Bauhaus and later emigrated to the USA in 1937. Rather than being a pioneer of brutalist modernism, Breuer’s work is best understood through the changing institutional structures he worked for. Recent historians, architects, and the public are gaining new insights into Breuer's large-scale building projects, such as the Whitney Museum, now the Met Breuer, in New York City.
